In substations and on distribution equipment, bare bushing terminals, bus connections and clamps sit within reach of birds, squirrels, snakes and other wildlife. An animal that bridges a live part and earth, or two phases, causes a flashover that trips the circuit, can damage equipment and can kill the animal. Gala's bus and bushing connection insulating covers enclose that bare metalwork in a pre-formed insulating shell.
The covers are moulded from a UV-stable, track-resistant cross-linked polyolefin in red. Standard shapes cover circuit-breaker and transformer bushings, bus standoff insulators, capacitors, voltage regulators, potential transformers, bus connections and dead-end and suspension clamps; bird cap covers and insulator protection covers are also made. Each cover is closed around the connection along a flanged seam, and its entry and exit holes are trimmed on site to suit the conductor, so one design fits a range of hardware. A cover can be opened for maintenance and refitted, which keeps lifetime cost low.
Gala's selection chart lists about 60 standard designs (GPS-1070 to GPS-1314), each with its fit dimensions and the maximum insulator or conductor diameter it takes. Where no standard shape fits, a new design can be developed to the customer's drawing.
