The Gala screened separable connector (GEB series) is a premoulded tee connector that connects single-core or three-core polymeric cable to medium voltage equipment fitted with Type C bushings to EN 50180 and EN 50181: ring main units, compact substations, switchgear and transformers. It is made from highly modified EPDM rubber with a conductive outer screen that is earthed, so the whole connection is touch-proof, fully screened and submersible, and it can be disconnected and reconnected.
Fitting needs no heat on the connector itself. The cable is prepared and wrapped with semiconductive tape; a greased cable adaptor with a built-in stress cone is pushed onto the insulation and a lug is fitted; the tee is pushed onto the bushing and bolted to its stud; an insulated plug and screened end cap close the front, and the screen is earthed. For three-core cable a conversion kit (heat shrink breakout, core tubes, copper braids, back-up ring and clamps) first splits the cable into three cores. A rear connector (GEBR) couples into the back of the tee so that a second cable can share the same bushing.
The connector is offered in 11 kV and 24 kV classes at 630 A continuous current, for conductors from 25 to 400 sq mm in copper or aluminium. Gala's 24 kV, 630 A connector was type tested at CPRI, Bangalore, in 2016 to IEC 60502-4 at 12/20 (24) kV. GSF states that each connector is factory tested for AC withstand and partial discharge.
