Many unplanned outages on distribution networks and in substations are caused by birds, squirrels and other animals bridging a live terminal to earth or to another phase. Gala's INSULSHROUD is a flexible insulating boot or shroud that covers the exposed terminal so the contact cannot happen, protecting both the network and the wildlife.
INSULSHROUD is moulded from a specially formulated flexible PVC. Standard shapes include bushing covers with side conductor entries, terminal covers with a round base, right-angle terminal covers, box covers and capacitor caps. Typical uses are transformer bushing covers, substation connector covers, auto-recloser terminals, surge arresters and single-pin insulators. Each cover comes with its fasteners, fits over the connection, and can be removed and refitted safely for maintenance.
Because the covers are moulded in-house, Gala can make a cover for almost any shape of connection, in small or large quantities, with low tooling cost and quick delivery; design assistance and CAD drawings are offered. Standard colours are grey, red and black. Recommended minimum wall thickness rises with system voltage: 2.2 mm for 12 kV, 3.1 mm for 18 kV and 3.8 mm for 24 kV. Covers also give protection against accidental flashover and short circuits at exposed connections.
