Standoff or support insulators hold a conductor, busbar or cable termination away from a structure while insulating it. Porcelain does the job but is heavy and brittle. Gala's polymeric standoff insulator replaces it with a fibreglass core covered by a weather-resistant polymeric sleeve with sheds, fitted with aluminium end fittings.
The polymeric material has a self-cleaning surface and keeps its water-repellent (hydrophobic) character over a long period, which helps in highly polluted environments. Compared with porcelain the insulator is compact, light and very hard to break, which also makes it less attractive to vandals. End fittings are made to the customer's requirement.
Two designs are offered. The 11 kV insulator is 240 mm long overall (140 mm between fittings) with a creepage distance of 310 mm. The 25/33 kV insulator is 430 mm long overall (330 mm between fittings) with a creepage distance of 1050 mm, as given on Gala's sheet. Both have a 31 mm core diameter. Typical uses are supporting outdoor cable terminations and conductors on poles and structures, and support insulation for busbars.
