About Silicone Interlocking Overhead Line Cover (GSIOC / GSDIOC)

Gala's silicone interlocking overhead line cover is a non-tracking silicone rubber profile that is fitted over a bare overhead conductor in the field and closed along its length by a hooked interlocking edge. It gives the conductor a layer of phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground insulation, so that birds, squirrels and other wildlife, tree branches or wind-blown debris touching the line no longer cause a flashover or an outage.

Two closures are made. The single interlocking cover (GSIOC) comes in a medium-voltage version, GSIOC-M, with a 2 mm wall for systems up to 12 kV, and a high-voltage version, GSIOC-H, with a 2.7 mm wall for systems up to 33 kV; each is made for conductors up to 12, 15, 18, 20 and 24 mm diameter. The double interlocking cover (GSDIOC-10) has two stacked hook profiles and a 3.8 mm wall, for conductors up to 10 mm diameter and systems up to 33 kV. Every size is packed in 15 m rolls.

Silicone rubber stays flexible in the cold (no cracking at -20 deg C), resists UV and weathering, and protects the conductor against corrosion from acid, alkali and salt. The cover is used by distribution utilities and line contractors on spans near trees, through wildlife areas, in substations and on jumpers, where retrofitting insulation is cheaper than replacing the conductor.
