About Heavy Wall Heat Shrink Tube for Cable Joints (GHW)

GHW is the heavy-wall member of Gala's INSULTUBE tubing range. It is a cross-linked polyolefin tube supplied expanded, which shrinks at about 125 deg C into a thick, tough outer layer. The compound carries carbon black for protection against sunlight.

The thicker wall is what sets it apart from medium-wall tube. On underground straight-through cable joints it is used as the final outer sleeve: it rebuilds the cable's protective jacket over the joint, resists the knocks, stones and abrasion of backfilling, and with the optional hot-melt adhesive lining it seals the joint ends against water. It is used on joints for systems up to 33 kV (36 kV equipment), as part of the joint build-up rather than as the primary insulation. The same tube suits any job that needs a heavy protective cover over cables, pipes or connections.

Sizes run from GHW 12/3 to GHW 425/120. Pick a size whose first figure (supplied inside diameter) passes over the widest part of the joint and whose second figure (recovered inside diameter) is smaller than the cable sheath it must grip. Order as code, size and length in mm, for example GHW 50/16 1000; cut lengths are available up to 1200 mm on most sizes.

Installation: park the tube on the cable before jointing, then centre it over the finished joint and shrink it with a propane torch from the middle outwards. On adhesive-lined tube, adhesive showing at both ends confirms a complete seal.
