Inside switchgear and transformer cable boxes the joint between the cable termination, its lug and the bushing is often the weakest point for flashover, especially where phase spacing is tight. Gala's BUSHINGBOOT is a straight, bellows-shaped insulating boot made from a non-tracking elastomeric compound. It covers that joint and adds phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth insulation, protecting against flashover and induced surges in the cable box.

The boot is cold applied: no heat is used. The installer checks that the lug has no sharp points, smears the silicone grease supplied with the boot over the finished cable core, slides the boot down over it, greases the inside of the bushing adaptor and pushes it onto the bushing so that its collar sits at least 5 to 10 mm onto the bushing and at least 15 mm from the back plate. The bellows section then lets the boot be set in a straight line or bent to a right angle to suit the connection. The boot does not provide touch protection.

Two sizes are made, both 230 mm long with a 50.5 mm bushing entry and a 2.5 mm wall: GSBB-1 with a 17.5 mm cable entry and GSBB-2 with a 22.0 mm cable entry. The user should check that the boot suits the particular bushing.
