About Constant Force Spring for Cable Screen Earthing in Joints

Every medium-voltage cable joint and termination needs a reliable earth connection between the cable's metallic screen or armour and the earthing braid or device. Soldering that connection takes time and heat close to the cable insulation. A constant force spring does the same job mechanically.

The spring is a pre-coiled strip, made from stainless steel according to Gala's sheet. It is wound over the earth braid where it lies on the cable screen or armour, and its coil tension keeps a constant pressure on the connection as the cable heats and cools in service, so the contact does not slacken. It is easily applied onto the sheath connection, needs no soldering or tools, and is corrosion-free and mechanically stable. The spring itself holds the connection; the braid or wire carries the earth current.

Constant force springs are used in heat-shrink, cast-resin and other medium-voltage joints and terminations, both inside Gala's jointing and termination kits and as a separate accessory for jointers and kit assemblers.

Sizes are matched to the diameter over the cable screen; ask for the size that suits the cable.
