Hand-applied insulation in a cable joint or repair is only as good as its weakest void. Gala's non-shrinkable insulation tape (code GNT) is an EPDM-based rubber tape designed to build insulation without voids. It has the property of cold flow: applied stretched with a 50% overlap, successive layers stick to each other and merge into one void-free insulating mass, giving good electrical stability and resistance to moisture penetration.

The tape is compatible with the common cable jacket materials, XLPE, PVC, PILC and rubber-sheathed cables. It resists moisture, contamination and adverse environmental conditions and protects the conductor from corrosive elements around it. It needs no heat.

To apply, start with the open end of the tape at the starting point, stretch it to about two-thirds of its original width, and wrap with a 50% overlap until no part is left uninsulated. Repeat in half-lapped, level-wound layers until the required build-up is reached. In critical areas, stretch the tape almost to its breaking point to eliminate voids; elsewhere, stretching to three-quarters of the width is enough.

GNT 1 rolls are 25 mm wide (minimum), 0.75 mm thick and at least 10 m long. The tape is black, rated for a 90 deg C operating temperature with a 130 deg C emergency overload, and GSF tests it to ASTM D4325.
