A fusion splice strips the fibre back to bare glass, which then needs protecting before it goes into the splice tray. Gala's splice protection sleeve is designed to give complete environmental and mechanical integrity to the coating or buffer of an optical fibre after splicing.

The sleeve is slid onto the fibre before splicing, moved over the finished splice and heat-shrunk in place. As photographed on Gala's sheet, it is a clear heat-shrink tube with a reinforcing rod inside, so the splice is both sealed and held straight. Gala states that the sleeve resists heat shock without cracking, dripping or flowing.

Splice protection sleeves are used wherever fibres are fusion spliced: in joint closures on aerial and underground routes, in FTTH distribution and termination boxes, and in the splice trays of patch panels in exchanges and data centres. A protected splice lies flat in the tray holder and is shielded from moisture and from bending at the bare glass.

Because the sleeve has to suit both the splicer's heater and the closure's splice tray, lengths and versions are given on request.
