A coated steel pipeline is left bare at every field weld. Unless that joint is coated to match the line coating, it is where corrosion starts. Gala's three-layer corrosion protection sleeve (code GTWS) is a wrap-around heat-shrink sleeve made to close that gap on buried or exposed steel pipelines, and on insulated pipelines.
The sleeve is a cross-linked polyethylene backing with a hot-melt adhesive layer. It is wrapped around the cleaned and pre-heated weld area, its overlap is closed with the supplied closure patch, and it is heat-shrunk with a torch. As it shrinks, the adhesive melts and bonds to the steel and to the polyethylene or FBE line coating on each side, forming a continuous anti-corrosion layer with the pipe's own coating. The finished joint resists soil stress, moisture, bacteria and mildew, the pipeline's cathodic protection current, and corrosion from liquids and solvents.
Each size is cut to the pipe's outside diameter: fifteen sizes run from GTWS dia 159 x 500 to GTWS dia 1016 x 500, all 500 mm wide, with sleeve lengths from 620 to 3430 mm and a 500 mm closure patch 100 to 200 mm long. On GSF's sheet the adhesive softens at 95 deg C, and the sleeve passes a -15 deg C flexibility test.
