GDW is Gala's dual wall tubing. Two layers are co-extruded together: an outer wall of cross-linked polyolefin that insulates and protects, and an inner wall of hot-melt adhesive. When the tube is heated the outer wall shrinks and the adhesive melts and flows into the gaps between wires, so one shrink gives both electrical insulation and a permanent seal against water and dirt.
It is used to seal wire splices and harness joints in automotive and communication equipment, as a simpler alternative to moulded parts and cable breakouts, and to insulate cables that carry connectors of different sizes in telecom, industrial equipment and avionics. The 4:1 range is useful where the tube must pass over a large connector and still grip a thin wire.
Two ranges are offered. The 3:1 range runs from GDW 3/1 to GDW 50/17; the 4:1 range from GDW 4/1 to GDW 24/6. Each size is supplied on a spool of 25 to 200 m. The code gives supplied and recovered inside diameter in mm; the recovered wall thickness quoted includes the adhesive layer.
GDW is listed by UL as a Recognized Component under file E328193 (heat-shrinkable polyolefin tubing with meltable liner, 600 V, 125 deg C, VW-1 flame rating). It is shrunk with a gas torch, working from the centre outwards until adhesive shows at both ends.
