Paper insulated lead covered (PILC) cable is still in service across many utility networks, and it needs extra care when it is jointed or terminated. Its paper insulation is impregnated with oil or compound, which migrates out of a cut core and can attack and track along the polymeric materials of a heat-shrink joint or termination.
Gala's oil barrier tube (code GOBT) stops that. Made from cross-linked polyolefin formulated to resist oil, it is shrunk over each prepared core, sealing the impregnant inside the paper while adding a layer of insulation. The heat-shrink components of the joint or termination then go on over it. Oil barrier tubes are part of Gala's PILC termination and joint kits, and are also supplied on their own.
Six sizes run from GOBT 30/10 to GOBT 115/34; the first figure is the minimum supplied inside diameter and the second the maximum recovered inside diameter, in mm. Recovered walls are 2.5 mm, and 3.0 mm on the largest size. The tube shrinks at 125 deg C and is rated for continuous use from -40 deg C to +110 deg C. Shrink with a soft propane flame, working from the centre outwards.
