Standard heat-shrink tube recovers to about a third of its supplied diameter. GMW 5x is made to shrink much further, to one fifth of its supplied inside diameter, so a single tube can pass over a bulky connector or back shell and still grip the much thinner cable behind it. That makes it the practical choice where a joint or termination has a large step in diameter, and it lets maintenance teams cover a wide range of jobs with fewer stocked sizes.
The tube is cross-linked polyolefin of the same family as Gala's GMW medium-wall tubing, with a thick recovered wall of 4.3 to 5.0 mm. Its compound contains carbon black against UV. An optional hot-melt adhesive lining gives a sealed, moisture-resistant cover.
Typical work includes repairing damaged cable sheaths, sealing the rear end of connectors, and covering transitions between cables and components where the sizes on each side differ greatly.
Order by code, size and length, adding "U" for tube without adhesive, for example GMW 5x 30/6 U 1000. Like other GMW tubing it is shrunk with a propane torch, working from the centre outwards; the shrink temperature is 125 deg C.
