About Heat Shrink Dock Pile Cap for Wooden Marine Piles (GPC)

Timber piles in docks, jetties, piers and wharves rot from the top down: rain and spray soak into the end grain, the top splits as it wets and dries, and decay follows the cracks. Capping the pile top keeps that water out. Gala's Dock Pile Cap does it with a heat-shrink cap that bonds to the wood.

The cap is cross-linked polyolefin with a hot-melt adhesive lining, supplied expanded. Cut the pile top straight, clean and degrease it, place the cap over the top and shrink it with a propane (preferred) or butane torch, from the closed end downward, until adhesive shows at the lower edge. It recovers above 125 deg C; leave it to cool before mooring lines or fenders bear on it. During shrinking the adhesive runs into cracks at the top and bonds the cap to the timber.

One fitting is enough; the cap needs no maintenance afterwards. Five sizes cover pile diameters from 140 mm to 460 mm. It is the same Gala cap sold for wooden power poles (POLECAP).
