A wooden pole takes in water through its cut top. As the top wets and dries it swells, shrinks and splits, and the cracks let in more water and decay. Gala's POLECAP closes the top of the pole.

The cap is a closed-end moulding of cross-linked polyolefin with a hot-melt adhesive lining, supplied in its expanded state. To fit it, cut the pole top straight, clean and degrease it, place the cap over the top and shrink it with a propane (preferred) or butane torch, working from the closed end down the pole until adhesive shows at the edge. The cap recovers above 125 deg C; let it cool before any load is applied. As it shrinks, the adhesive flows into surface cracks at the top and bonds the cap to the wood, keeping water out of the end grain.

Five sizes cover pole diameters from 140 mm to 460 mm. The cap is fitted once and needs no maintenance. The same cap is used on wooden dock piles and marine piles, listed separately as the Dock Pile Cap.
