A wooden pole usually fails at the ground line. That is where it carries the highest bending stress, where soil moisture wicks into the wood and starts decay, and where drying cracks let termites into the core. The damage is hidden below the soil and often goes unnoticed until the pole is weak.

Gala's Pole Protection Tube (code GPPT) is the tubular version of Gala's pole protection range, meant for new poles. Because it is a closed tube, it is slid over the pole before cross-arms, cables and fittings are mounted, positioned over the ground-line section and then heat-shrunk so that it grips the pole along with the bituminous liner beneath it. Each GPPT size covers a wider spread of pole diameters than the matching wrap-type sleeve.

Installation follows the same steps as the sleeve: clean the pole, position the tube, shrink it with a propane torch (butane torch or hot-air gun also used) from the centre outwards in a circular motion, check for wrinkles or trapped air, and let it cool before handling.

Good candidates are new poles, especially poles to be set in pavement, poles going into decay-prone ground, and high-value or hard-to-replace installations. For poles that are already standing with equipment fitted, use the wrap-type Pole Protection Sleeve (GPPS) instead.
