The ground-line zone is where a wooden utility pole carries the most bending stress and where it rots fastest. Soil moisture is drawn up into the wood, decay starts once the moisture content passes roughly 25 percent, and the drying cracks that open at and just above the soil line give termites a route into the core. A pole weakened this way often still looks sound from outside.
Gala's Pole Protection Sleeve (wrap type, code GPPS) seals that zone. It is a cross-linked polyolefin sheet used together with a bituminous liner. Because it wraps around the pole instead of sliding over the top, it is the version for poles that are already standing with cables and fittings in place, so nothing has to be dismantled.
Fitting is a field job: clean the pole surface and remove loose material, wrap the sleeve over the section to be protected, then shrink it with a propane torch (a butane torch or hot-air gun also works), starting at the centre and moving round the pole until the sleeve grips. Check for wrinkles or trapped air and let it cool before loading the pole. The sleeve carries a printed ground-line mark showing where the soil level should sit.
Typical uses are relocated or reused poles, standing poles whose ground line has been disturbed by cable laying or regrading, poles in decay-prone ground, and poles kept in storage for six months or more. For new poles that can be sleeved before erection, use the Pole Protection Tube (GPPT).
