About Heat Shrink Semi-Conductive Tube for MV Cable Joints (GCT)

In a medium-voltage straight-through joint, the conductor connector is covered with insulation, and that insulation then needs an outer semi-conductive screen, just like the cable on either side, so the electric field stays inside the insulation. Gala's INSULTUBE Semi-Conductive tube (code GCT) provides that screen.

The tube is made from a thermally stabilised, cross-linked semi-conductive polymer. It is shrunk over the joint's insulation build-up and overlaps the cable's own screen on both sides, so the screen is continuous across the joint. It is used in joints on plastic-insulated (XLPE, PVC) and paper-insulated cables up to 33 kV (36 kV equipment), under the joint's metallic screen and outer protection.

Sizes on Gala's chart run from GCT 30/10 to GCT 180/55; the first figure is the minimum supplied inside diameter and the second the maximum recovered inside diameter, in mm, with recovered walls of 2.5 to 3.0 mm. Shrink with a soft propane flame.

Where one tube should carry both the insulation and the screen, Gala also makes a co-extruded double layer tube (GDLT), listed separately.
