About Heat Shrink Busbar Tape - Adhesive Coated (BUSTAPE GMT-2L)

BUSTAPE is Gala's heat-shrinkable, adhesive-coated insulating tape for medium-voltage busbars. Busbar runs are normally insulated with heat-shrink busbar sleeve, but bends, offsets, irregular joints and repairs often cannot take a tube. The tape is wrapped on instead and shrunk in place, giving the same kind of insulation and protecting the bar against accidental flashover and corrosion.

Installation: the tape is wound helically with a two-thirds overlap, adhesive side to the bar, running at least 75 mm onto the existing insulation. The free end is held with glass-fibre adhesive tape, and the wrap is shrunk with a propane torch or an electric hot-air blower until a bead of adhesive shows at the edge of each turn. As the tape shrinks it conforms to the contour and squeezes the adhesive into surface irregularities, forming a tough, waterproof seal that bonds to most surfaces and resists solvents once cured.

The tape is cross-linked polyolefin in red, supplied in rolls 50 mm wide and 15 m long with a 1.0 mm thickness, and shrinks at 125 deg C. It passed an inclined-plane tracking test (ASTM D2303 at 3.25 kV, ERDA 2018, against a 25 mm criterion). Gala holds POWERGRID manufacturer approval for insulation sleeves and tapes up to 52 kV class, valid to February 2028.

Switchgear builders, utilities and maintenance teams use it for bends, joints and repair work on busbars in switchgear, busducts and substations.
